Ahead of the Cycle 100, Owain talks about the impact of losing his best friend to suicide

Olympic gold medal cyclist Owain Doull

As cyclists across the UK gear up to take on the Cycle 100 in July, now is a time to reflect and remember that in the UK and Ireland, 100 men a week take their own life.

Back in 2020, Welsh road cyclist and Olympic gold medallist Owain Doull MBE opened up about losing his best friend to suicide.

“I think Siôn struggled a lot when the lockdown started. That face to face contact, that’s the really important stuff in life for people and for that to be taken away is dangerous.”

Owain has since gone on to raise thousands for Movember, and start just as many conversations about men’s mental health through different fundraising challenges in the last two years.

As Movember and hundreds of cyclists across the UK gear up to take on the Cycle 100 in July, now is a time to reflect that across the UK and Ireland, 100 men a week take their own life.

The Cycle 100 challenges you to cycle 100 miles between the 4th and 11th July to raise funds and awareness for men's mental health and suicide prevention.

There are a host of rewards for riders. The first 500 people to raise just £10 receive a limited edition Movember cycle cap, and if you raise £300 you receive the Movember cycle jersey. Everyone completing the 100 miles will also receive a Cycle 100 patch to wear with pride.

Movember supports all individuals within the LGBTQIA+ community, including those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual. Health disparities exist, with LGBTQIA+ individuals experiencing higher rates of mental health issues and discrimination, often exacerbated by stigma in healthcare. We advocate for the right to self-identify, protection from discrimination, inclusive education, and rights-affirming healthcare, ensuring everyone can lead a healthy, dignified life.

Movember acknowledge the many and varied experiences of people navigating their health and wellbeing, those who support them and those who came before us whose stories, struggles and strength have shaped what we know. We recognise those who have generously shared their knowledge and wisdom with us and honour those we have lost too soon. Their knowledge, insight and expertise are essential to improving the design, delivery and evaluation of the work that we do and their experiences remind us why this work matters.
