The Real Face of Men's Health: California Report

A man wearing a hat is looking off to the distance, we can see the neon sign of the Ivy Room behind him.

California men die, on average, more than five years earlier than women.

California men die an average of more than five years earlier than California women. And when they do reach for help, the system too often isn't built to catch them.

The Real Face of Men’s Health: California Report 2026 combines state mortality data, new survey findings from Californian men, and peer-reviewed evidence to make the case for a coordinated state strategy on boys' and men's health.

The opportunity lies where men already are.

  • Inside the clinic, practitioner training such as Men in Mind shows the quality of the encounter can be improved with existing workforce and modest investment.
  • 1 in 5 new fathers experience a perinatal mental health disorder, making the transition to fatherhood a key window to reach men. Yet, unlike maternal mental health, no equivalent screening requirement exists for fathers in California.
  • Men who are regularly physically active have a 15% lower risk of all-cause mortality than men who are inactive.
  • Community connection, digital health tools, and the workplaces where men already gather all offer high-yield, low-cost ways to reach the men who never present at clinical services.

Half of all male deaths in California occur before the age of 75.

"Like a lot of men, I've spent most of my life showing up, working hard, and carrying the load was just what a man does. You push through stress, ignore warning signs, and tell yourself you'll deal with it later … one of the biggest lessons I've learned: later isn't always guaranteed."
Robert, Southern California

What happens next?

California has the scale, the ambition, and the public-health track record to lead the nation on boys' and men's health. Movember is calling on the state to commit to a coordinated strategy — backed by dedicated leadership, community investment, a stronger workforce, and better data — so that more boys and men live longer, healthier lives. We're inviting California to partner with the Movember Institute of Men's Health to help build the evidence base that gets us there.

Movember supports all individuals within the LGBTQIA+ community, including those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual. Health disparities exist, with LGBTQIA+ individuals experiencing higher rates of mental health issues and discrimination, often exacerbated by stigma in healthcare. We advocate for the right to self-identify, protection from discrimination, inclusive education, and rights-affirming healthcare, ensuring everyone can lead a healthy, dignified life.

Movember acknowledge the many and varied experiences of people navigating their health and wellbeing, those who support them and those who came before us whose stories, struggles and strength have shaped what we know. We recognise those who have generously shared their knowledge and wisdom with us and honour those we have lost too soon. Their knowledge, insight and expertise are essential to improving the design, delivery and evaluation of the work that we do and their experiences remind us why this work matters.
