AI x Men's Health Research

AI x Men's Health Research

Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming deeply embedded in young men's lives. It has become a source of mental health support, emotional support, companionship, and more. For some, it is their only source. Movember is working to make sure the evidence on young men’s experiences of AI is keeping up with the speed at which this online world is changing, so we can help keep them safe. We’re working with young men and a range of partners in this research program to understand how young men are using AI, and to investigate both the opportunities and the risks it presents for their mental health and wellbeing.

Who it’s for

YOUNG MEN & THOSE WHO CARE FOR THEM

To share information so young men can make evidence-informed choices on AI use knowing how and where AI will be most useful and safe for them.

RESEARCHERS & ACADEMICS

To access emerging evidence on how young men are engaging with AI platforms, and what the mental health implications of that engagement are.

TECH PLATFORMS & AI DEVELOPERS

To understand the responsibility they hold for the mental health of the young men using their products, and what evidence-based safeguards look like.

CLINICIANS & PRACTITIONERS

To better understand how young men are using AI as a substitute for — or pathway to — mental health support, and how to respond accordingly.

POLICYMAKERS & REGULATORS

To access evidence that informs responsible AI regulation, with a focus on protecting the mental health of young men and other vulnerable users.

FUNDRAISERS & SUPPORTERS

To know that your support is going where it matters most. Funding research that meets young men where they are, listens to their experiences, and drives the education, policy and practice needed to improve their health and wellbeing.

GLOBAL IMPACT

AI is increasingly being used by young men as a form of emotional and mental health support, and those most likely to seek it out are also the most vulnerable to harm.

90%

of young men aged 16-24 have used AI in the last year, preliminary data suggests

28%

of adults have been emotionally vulnerable with a chatbot

82%

of young men watch pornography

54%

of young men worry they watch too much pornography
