Josh Rice: 3 challenges in 3 months

"In March 2019 my dad became part of the 1.4 million men diagnosed with prostate cancer every year. They managed to catch it early, luckily. After one successful operation and completing his radiotherapy he's now cancer free and his outlook looks positive. However, I know not everyone's story is the same so supporting a cause like Movember is important to me this and every year.

In previous years I’ve done the classic Mo but last year I also did my first running challenge with a group of mates, 100km in November. This year I’m taking part in a 3 month challenge to raise money for 3 charities, including Movember. I’ll be doing 100km in August, 10,000 metres swimming in September and finished off with 300km of cycling in October.

When my dad had prostate cancer, I don’t think I ever quite accepted what was happening at the time. I didn’t really talk to anyone about it until I shared why I was doing Movember. I realised there certainly wasn’t a lack of support around me, I had just chosen not to reach out. When my fiances dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and passed away I knew I had that support network.

Life can be tough, but surrounding yourself with good people will make the tough times slightly easier. Being able to talk to people when your loved ones have something as terrible as cancer really helps."

Movember supports all individuals within the LGBTQIA+ community, including those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual. Health disparities exist, with LGBTQIA+ individuals experiencing higher rates of mental health issues and discrimination, often exacerbated by stigma in healthcare. We advocate for the right to self-identify, protection from discrimination, inclusive education, and rights-affirming healthcare, ensuring everyone can lead a healthy, dignified life.

Movember acknowledge the many and varied experiences of people navigating their health and wellbeing, those who support them and those who came before us whose stories, struggles and strength have shaped what we know. We recognise those who have generously shared their knowledge and wisdom with us and honour those we have lost too soon. Their knowledge, insight and expertise are essential to improving the design, delivery and evaluation of the work that we do and their experiences remind us why this work matters.

Movember Foundation is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
