Our Motivation

This November I'm lifting for Movember.

The challenge is easy to say and hard to do. By 30 November: press one plate a side (60 kg), bench two (100 kg), squat three (140 kg) and deadlift four (180 kg). One clean rep of each. It's called the November Plate Club, and I'm taking it on myself.

Why Movember? Because men are bad at looking after their health. We train through injuries, sit on symptoms for months and say we're fine when we're not. In the UK, suicide is the biggest killer of men under 50. About one man in eight will get prostate cancer. Testicular cancer mostly hits young men. Movember funds work on all three, and it talks to men in a way they actually listen to.

The gym is a good place for men to look after their heads as well as their bodies. You turn up, you lift, you write it down and you come back. It gives the week a shape. But it's also a place where we hide. You can train next to someone for years and never ask how he's really doing.

So I'm using the training to raise money, and I hope to get a few more men talking. I make a strength-training app called Iron Church, and anyone in it can join the Plate Club for free. Every set they log counts towards the four lifts, and the club page shows everyone who makes all four. If they want a plan, Brodin, the app's coach, will write them a four-week block to peak for the attempt. The event links to this page. Nothing is sold through the challenge and the app takes nothing from it. Every penny given here goes to Movember.

If you can give, thank you. If you can't, do something just as useful. Ask a mate how he's doing and wait for the real answer. Book the check-up you've been putting off. If you're over 50, or over 45 and Black or with a family history of prostate cancer, talk to your GP. Check yourself.

And if you lift, come and join the club. Four plates by the end of November. Let's see how many of us get there.
