My motivation
Fundraising for cause areas including:
Men's health
Prostate cancer
Testicular cancer
Mental health and suicide prevention

There aren't many things we do for a decade. Parenthood has two intense decades. Yankees and Mets fans have good decades mixed with the atrocious. Phish is in their 5th decade of creating joy and loudness. Dealing with chronic illness, including mental health issues, is a constant over decades.

As I’ve heard from you over the last years, men’s cancers, mental health and their intersections impact nearly everyone. Every contribution comes with a story, sometimes happy, often in a minor key, always pushing me to spread the message of self-care.

Welcome to my 10th year of MoBro fundraising. Your generosity and support have been truly decade-level worthy as I’ve had 3 consecutive years in the top 150 in the US, 2 $10k+ years and a lifetime total over $50k. Upward from here.

I’ve been rowing for the past 18 months and while I'm not one of the "Boys In The Boat" I've tested my personal limits: I’m aiming for 60 km of virtual water, or 12-15 segments at my typical, non-Olympic pace.

I will share some crazy things as I pass various fundraising goals, and starting early this year will help.

I'm moving 60km this Movember for the 60 men we lose each hour of every day. This is about 15 average sessions for me and about twice my normal pace

Thanks to some remarkably generous donors, I'm just $43 shy of another $10,000 year. I've heard from a few old work friends who were there for my first few Movember campaigns, and some newer co-workers who share a passion for promoting health and health issue awareness.

Over the summer I read Gerda Barker's memoir "Don't Stand In Line," an homage to the late punk/early industrial music scene coming out of Chicago largely featuring Barker's husband -- Paul Barker -- as bass player for Ministry. The mental health issues of everyone in and around the band, including Al Jourgensen, and the cameo appearances by Billy Tucker (Princeton area Regressive Aid, several tours with Ministry) and his eventual suicide after a bout with testicular cancer, were remarkably and poignantly conveyed. Instead of a tell-all torrid tale, Barker shares what it was like for the band families to deal with the roller coaster of emotions and creative outputs, the joy of music and the despair between. It was definitely in my Movember 2023 notebook as one of the better views of the impacts of men's cancers and mental health.

Hit the 1/4 point in rowing last night with a solid 20 minute Buffy "sweat row".
Am I feeling it today? Yes. Am I feeling the Movember love on 11-1? Bigger yes! Am I feeling the incredible support and encouragement of this 55-person boat, pushing me past the halfway point in fundraising? Huge yes!

Happy Movember, team

A first for me: Three days in a row (pun intended) putting in the work, the leg push and the meters. I've connected my Strava app (which I use religiously to track workouts and long walks) to Movember so my rowing auto-posts over here.

Happy first full week of Movember, team

Duran Duran was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame over the weekend, and guitarist Andy Taylor missed the gig because he's dealing with stage 4 metastatic prostate cancer:
https://www.theguardian.com/music/2022/nov/07/duran-duran-andy-taylor-reveals-he-has-stage-4-cancer
Duran Duran was a staple of my WPRB DJ years before their music settled into the music vernacular ("Girls on Film", "Rio", "Hungry Like a Wolf").

This is why we grow, row and mo(ve).

one of the Movember slogans is “know your nuts” - in this case creepy steampunk Mr Peanut would like you to self examine

Today is the 48th Hebrew calendar anniversary of my Bar Mitzvah: the story of Noah. People think of the post-flood rainbow as a covenant (commitment); the key word in the preceding passage is "remembered." The rainbow appears because the Almighty remembered Noah for doing the right things even under pretty weird circumstances.

It seemed auspicious for the weekend to start Movember as I have more people, more stories, more personal impact to remember, lives impacted and dignity and bravery and sometimes weird circumstances. And I make an increasing commitment to raise money, push my physical limits, and raise awareness.

You guys are nuts!!! (How appropriate!!). Goal #3 passed on the way to an all-time campaign record, aiming for $35,000 lifetime and maybe 5 figures this year?

Pain? Endurance? Soul? Actually, just singing along to "Slip Kid" from "The Who By Numbers." Had the album on my mind quite a bit since the Phish "numbers" show in Las Vegas. Shout out to middle/high school buddy Mark Addeo who got the Who/whole rock and roll thing long before the rest of us.

I'm $12 away from $8,000, and $278 away from goal #3. Happy weekend, Mo Team.

Over the summer I briefly played bass in a "pickup band" and we played a lot of Badfinger - the band you heard but don't know. "Come and Get It," "If You Want It," "Day After Day" - all Badfinger. They sound a little Beatles-like mixed with power pop of the early 1970s (McCartney wrote some songs for them). When legal and financial messes took center stage, vocal/guitar player Pete Ham and bass player Tom Evans committed suicide. Outside, these guys had an outsized influence on rock and roll. Inside, they were the tortured from so many angles artists. Be kind to each other, Mo Bros.

In this age of choosing our video call backgrounds carefully, I started curating the "back wall" of my office in an array of influences. The patent wall comes from strong mentors who encouraged me to think outside the box; the Willie Stargell star was a gift from his niece; the paintings are my father's interpretations of places we've been; I'm visible in all of those concert photos. The Movember skateboard represents the net sum - team work, hard aggressive goals, heartfelt and sincere engagement and the foundational elements of building a long-lived story, whether your own or that of someone who has been struggling.

Note: As donations can be made privately, not all donations are displayed to the public.
