Mental health and suicide prevention

This Movember, I’m growing the mustache and speaking up for a reason that’s deeply personal.

Too many men are fighting silent battles, hiding their pain behind a brave face and trying to tough it out. I know that pain—and I know what it can cost.

Eleven years ago, I lost my best friend to suicide. To the world, he was the happiest guy in the room—the one who lit it up with laughter and energy. Behind that smile was pain most of us never saw until it was too late.

His death shattered me. I felt anger, guilt, confusion, and the unbearable silence that follows when the person you’d usually call just isn’t there anymore. In that darkness, family, friends, and an online community helped me understand I wasn’t alone. That’s when I found The Yellow Elephant: a symbol reminding us not to ignore what’s already in the room. The elephant represents mental health; yellow represents hope and light.

I got my QPR certification—like CPR, but for mental health—and created ACT: Acknowledge, Care, Tell. It’s a space where people can speak freely, find help, and be reminded they’re not alone.

But this year, I had to face something I’ve spent a long time telling others: I need support, too.

Running a small restaurant can take everything you have. I keep pushing through the stress, trying to solve one more problem and carry one more thing. I’m good at checking in on other people. When it comes to myself, I don’t always ask for help—or even let people know how close to the edge I feel.

This year, I hit a wall. I had to admit I was overwhelmed and make space to reset with my wife and Coda. It didn’t magically fix the stress waiting for me afterward, but it reminded me that I’m allowed to pause, be honest, and let the people who care about me show up.

That’s what ACT means to me now, too: acknowledge when I’m struggling, care enough to take it seriously, and tell someone instead of carrying it alone.

Every Movember, I grow the mustache and speak out for my friend—and for every man who thinks he has to fight alone. This year, I’m doing it while being more honest about my own struggle, because mental health isn’t something we only talk about when someone else is hurting.

Silence can be deadly. Speaking up can save a life.

Never Alone isn’t just a motto. It’s a promise.

Thank you for shedding light on the struggles men face with mental healthy every day. They should not be overlooked or made to feel weak in their vulnerability. God Bless You.

Keep fighting. It is a problem enough do not realize until it’s too late.
