This November, I’m taking part in Movember to raise funds and awareness of Prostate and testicular cancer, mental health and in tribute to my father.
My Dad, Norman William Smart — or “Bill,” as he preferred to be known, died on the 9th July 2025, aged 79. A husband twice over, a father to four boys, a mentor, a consultant, a funder, a cancer survivor, a Mo’ wearer, a true friend to many and a big influence on my life.
He had the rare ability to be serious and often solemn, entertaining and funny (the Master of Ceremonies at times), clever without showing off, and generous in both spirit and time - often to complete strangers who became longer term friends.
My Dad’s sharp wit, humour and sense of bravado were formed in an early life, growing up at The White Bear, the oldest pub and hotel in Devizes. A front-row seat to human nature and more than a few life lessons along the way.
Dad had a formidable drive and perseverance; from building a successful management career to an early life in the Army, passing the formidable special forces selection - He lived by a number of philosophies, some I’ve kept from 1979, when I was just four years old!
My father was a force of nature, physically and mentally strong, but he’d also struggled with his physical and his mental health. He fought colon cancer, heart issues / bypasses, mobility issues and an attempt to end his life during Covid.
I’ve inherited a number of my father’s traits and genetics, trying to keep the good and lose the bad, but I did inherit a family history of large prostates (see earlier post); something that he’d say “impress the doctors!”
He loved to quote, and here is one from one of his favourite rogues, Oliver Reed:
“Do what you must, but do it well — and above all, enjoy yourself “
